The origin of the SDF file goes back to the first version of the HEC-GeoRAS interface (v.3.1) which was first developed in 1996 as an extension forArcView 3.2. It provides a set of procedures, tools, and utilities for thepreparation of GIS data for import into RAS and generation of GIS data fromRAS output (USACE, 2002a).HEC-RAS writes the export file with the RASexport.sdf file extension (forHEC-GeoRAS to generate GIS data from RAS output) and the informationcontent of the SDF file can be migrated into GIS for further spatial manipulations, analysis, and presentations. For HEC-RAS to be able to generate an SDF file thegeometry of the RAS project must be fully georeferenced. Two conditions need tobe met for a geometry component to be georeferenced:• All reaches must have an X-Y vertex definition• All cutlines (plan view representation of cross sections) must have anX-Y vertex definitionThus, if the HEC-RAS project is fully georeferenced (normally the casewhen the RAS input is created from GIS data) its output can be exported into anSDF file for GIS ingestion. The ExportGIS subroutine of the HECRASControlleris the method invoked by the RASCaller application to generate theRASexport.sdf file containing the hydraulic output information. Figure 4.34depicts the signature of the ExportGIS method.152
