184 COMMONS JOURNAL, APRIL 17, 1758–MAY 19, 1758That the Compelling Vagrants to inlist in the said Regiment will notanswer the End proposed in as much as Such persons cannot be relied on.But the Committee are of Opinion that the most [proper] Method ofprocuring Recruits for filling up the said Regiment will be by sending Officersto the Northward & inlisting Volunteers for that Purpose.And as to the Bounty-Money for Inlisting, it does not Appear to theCommittee that any Sum was Limited in that Case by the Act of Assembly.Ordered that the Said Report be Considered To morrow Morning.A Member acquainted the House that Some of the Paper bills of CreditCurrent Money of this Province had been counterfeited & Several of themLately uttered & that the Public Treasurer had discovered one of the Personsconcern’d therein, who it was supposed is fled toward the Cherokee Country,& moved the House for their directions therein.Ordered That the Treasurer do take Such Measures for apprehending& bringing to Justice all Such Persons as he Shall have reason to beleive areConcernd in the Counterfeiting or uttering the said Counterfeited Billsknowing them to be Counterfeited as he the said Treasurer shall Judge willbe most Effectual.And then the House adjourned till Three of the Clock.P.M.According to Order the following address was Drawn, viz.May it Please your Excellency,This House having in Consequence of a Message from your Excellencyof the 18th of January Last, resolved to provide for defraying the Expenceof Sending Provisions to the Independant Companies in the back Settlementin Lieu of the Two Pence per Diem additional Pay Granted by this Governmentto the Men belonging to the said Companies, we humbly desire thatyour Excellency will be pleased to order the Commissary not to pay the SaidTwo Pence per Diem from the Said 18th day of January.Ordered That the said Address be presented to his Excellency by Mr.Gadsden & Mr. Bull.Mr. Manigault reported from the Committee who were appointed toprepare a Schedule to be annexed to the Tax Bill that the Committee hadprepared a Schedule accordingly which they had directed him to report tothe House & he read the Report in his Place & afterwards delivered it in atthe Clerk’s Table, Where the same was read.Resolved That this House will tomorrow Morning take the said Reportinto Consideration.A Message from the Council by Mr. Bassnett.
