APRIL 19, 1760507The said Gentlemen accordingly withdrew: And being returned, Mr.Pinckney reported to the House that Mr. Carne had taken the Oaths beforethe Lieutenant Governor.And then Mr. Carne took his Seat as a Member of the House.Mr. Laurens reported from the Committee to whom the Petition ofdivers Inhabitants of Charles-Town, in behalf of themselves and others wasreferred, that they had examined the Matter of the said Petition, and humblyrecommend to the House,That a Bill be brought in to prevent as much as may be the furtherspreading of the Small-Pox in the said Town.Ordered that the said Report be considered next Tuesday Morning.A Petition of Levi Durand, Rector of St. John’s, and Alexander Garden,Rector of St. Thomas’s Parishes, was presented to the House, and read, settingforth, That the Petitioners for some years past have laboured under anill state of health, and have been advised to change of Climate as the mosteffectual means for the recovery of their health, in order thereto they takethe opportunity of a Vessel ready to sail for Rhode Island: And humbly prayingthat their Salaries may be continued to them during their absence, forsuch a space of time as the House shall allow of &c.Resolved That the Salaries of the said Levi Durand & Alexander Gardenbe continued during their Absence from this Province, not exceedingNine Months.Mr. Wragg acquainted the House that Mr. Guerard and himself had pursuantto their Order carried the Message with the Ordinance to the CouncilChamber, where he (Mr. Wragg) on his entrance within the Door of the CouncilChamber, read the Message to the Members there present. But that the Presidentof the Council would not receive the Message, unless it was delivered nearthe Head of the Council Table, where he then stood; whereupon they withdrew:And Mr. Wragg prayed the directions of the House therein.Ordered That Mr. Wragg and Mr. Guerard do go to the Council-Chamberand acquaint the Council that they have a Message to deliver at their Bar.The said Gentlemen accordingly withdrew.And being returned, Mr. Wragg reported that they had delivered theMessage: And that the President of the Council came a few Steps, below theGovernor’s Chair, and said he would receive their Message there, that theyhad no Bar.Ordered, That the said Gentlemen do deliver the said Message at thePlace where the President of the Council offered to receive it before.Then they again withdrew.And being returned, Mr. Wragg acquainted the House that the Councilhad adjourned.
