30 COMMONS JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 14, 1757–DECEMBER 9, 1757of Admiralty in this Province for many years past and now Keeps an officefor that purpose conveniently Situated for the Trading part of this Town andPraying that the said Office of Controller be granted to him.A Petition of Morton Brailsford Setting Forth, Vizt.That the office of Controller of the Country Duties being now vacantby the Death of Mr. Samuel Bowman prays he may be appointed to Succeedto that Office.A Petition of Henry Kennan Setting Forth, Vizt.That by the Death of Mr. Samuel Bowman the office of the CountryController is now become Vacant, That he has been some years a waiter, Thathe has a familly and out of all imploy and therefore prays to be appointedto that Office.Petition of William Gibbes Setting Forth, Vizt.Praying to be appointed Controller of the Country Dutys in this Province.Mr. Laurens reported to the House that Mr. Crawford had taken theOaths before his Excellency the Governor.Ordered That Robert Pringle Esqr., a member of this House & one ofHis Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, do administer the Oath appointed by theElection Law to be taken by all Persons who shall serve as Members of theGeneral Assembly of this Province to Mr. Crawford.And Mr. Pringle administerd the said Oath Accordingly.And then Mr. Crawford took his seat as a Member of the House.Resolved that Controller of the Country Duties be chosen by Ballott.And Lists of the names of the several Candidates being divers times putinto a hat by the several Members, it appeared upon taking the said Lists out,that Morton Brailsford had the majority of votes.Then the House According to order proceeded to read the “Ordinanceappointing ______ Controller of the Country duties in the province of SouthCarolina” a Second time.An Amendment was proposed to the Title of the Ordinance, viz., Leaveout “in the Province of South Carolina,” & insert “for the Port & Harbourof Charles Town.” And the said Amendment was upon the Question beingput thereupon disagreed with by the House.Another Amendment was proposed, viz., add to the Title the Words “thePorts of George Town Winyaw & Beauford Port Royal Excepted.” And thesaid Amendment was agreed to by the House.And the Ordinance was read a Second time with Blanks which werefilled up & the Ordinance amended.Then a Clause was offerd to be added to the Ordinance appointing theController to be first Sworn well & faithfully to Execute the said Office. Andto enter into a bond for that purpose.
