222 COMMONS JOURNAL, APRIL 17, 1758–MAY 19, 1758And the same was read a Second time accordingly.An Amendment was proposed, viz., Leave out “absolutely” in the Preamble,Line 3d.And the said Amendment was upon the Question being put thereuponagreed unto by the House.And the severall Blanks were filled up and the Ordinance amended.And the Title was made “an Ordinance to Appoint Mr. Henry BedonCountry Waiter for the Port of Charles Town.”Ordered That Mr. Laurens do Carry the Ordinance to the Council.Then the House resumed the adjourned Consideration of the thirdreading of the Residue of the Tax Bill.And the Question being put that Lands upon Charles Town neck berated according to Value.It was resolved in the affirmative.And the Question being put that the Proprietors of Land in CharlesTown be obliged to return the number of Feet claimed by every Such Proprietor.It Passed in the Negative.Then the Question being put That the Tax upon St. Philip & St. Michaelbe Levied in the Same manner as it hath heretofore been done Exceptingthe Lands upon Charles Town Neck.It Passed in the Negative.And the Bill was read a third time throughout and Several amendmentswere made by the House to the Bill.Resolved that the Bill do pass. And that the Title be “an Act for raising& Granting to His Majesty the Sum of £166,438:18:1 1 /4 & applying £8069:3:6(being the Surplus of Taxes & Ballance of a Fund in the Public Treasury)making together £174,507:18:1 1 /4 to defray the Charges of the Governmentfrom the 25th of March 1757 to the 24th day of March 1758, and for other Servicestherein Mentioned.”Ordered that Mr. Manigault do Carry the Bill to the Council and desiretheir Concurrence.And then the House adjourned till to Morrow morning Nine of the Clock.Saturday the 13th of May 1758.The Journal of Yesterdays Proceedings was read.“A Bill impowering Magistrates to inlist Vagrants in the South CarolinaRegiment,” was read a third time.An Amendment was proposed, Viz., That all Persons who came into thisProvince to take up Lands upon His Majestys Bounty; & all Persons who had been
