JANUARY 23, 1759283and the said Gentlemen made Choice of Mr. Lowndes to be their Chairman,and he adjourned the House till to Morrow Morning Ten of the Clock.Tuesday the 23d day of January 1759.The Journal of last Friday’s Proceedings was read.Ordered That the Order of the Day for reading The “Bill to Revive andContinue the several Acts and Clauses of Acts of the General Assembly of thisProvince, and for amending some of the said Acts in the manner thereinmentioned,” a Second time, be now read.And the said Order being read accordingly,The Governor’s Message of last Friday,And The Message of this House to the Governor of the 11th of May last,being severally read,Then the Governor’s said Message was read a Second time,And several Papers and Letters directed to the Governor from SixCollonels of Regiments of the Militia of this Province, relative to the MilitiaLaw, were also severally read.A Motion was made, and the Question being put that the Second Readingof the “Bill to Revive and Continue the several Acts and Clauses of Actsof the General Assembly of this Province and for amending some of the saidActs in the manner therein mentioned,” be Postponed,It passed in the Negative.And the said Bill was read a Second time with Blanks which were filledup and several Amendments were made by the House to the Bill.Ordered That Mr. Murray and Mr. Roper do carry the Bill to the Council.A Message from the Governor by Mr. Simpson.Mr. Speaker and Gentlemen,Captain Raymond Demere having represented to me that he has presenteda Memorial to You, praying that Provision may be made by your Housefor reimbursing him certain Sums of Money expended by him and dischargingDebts incurred by him for the Public Service, during the time he Commandedin the Cherokee Nation, and having made it his Request to Me thatI would recommend the said Memorial to your Consideration, it appearingto me that the Conduct of the aforesaid Gentleman, during the Continuanceof his Command above-mentioned was prudent and advantageous to theKing’s Service in General, and more especially to His Majesty’s Interestsamong the Indians, I do recommend the Memorial to your Considerationaccordingly.William Henry Lyttelton.
