464 COMMONS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 4, 1760–AUGUST 6, 1760Ordered, That the Address relating to the Acadians be presented to hisExcellency by Mr. Laurens.Mr. Gadsden reported from the Committee to whom the Governor’sMessage relating to Fort Prince George was referred, that they had consideredthe Matter of the said Message and had come to several Resolutionsthereupon, which they had directed him to report to the House, and he readthe Report in his Place and afterward delivered it in at the Clerk’s Table:Where the same was read and is as followeth, Vizt.The Committee, having considered his Excellency’s Message, are ofOpinion that Fort Prince George ought to be relieved as speedily as possible;and recommend that five hundred Men be provided for, for that purpose;which Number together with all, or as many of the Rangers as can be sparedfrom their particular Duty, they think will be sufficient to answer that End.The Committee further recommend that this Number of Men be paidand Officer’d nearly in the same manner as the Rangers are, Vizt., That eachCompany consist of about Seventy five Men under one Captain and two Lieutenants.The Captain to have £50 per Month, the first Lieutenant £35 perMonth, the second Lieutenant £30 per Month, each private Man £15 perMonth. The Officers and Men to provide themselves with Arms and Provisions;but Ammunition the Committee recommend to be found them. Andcontinue in Pay till the first Day of July next.As to Fort Loudoun the Committee are of Opinion that an Attempt torelieve it in the present calamitous state of the Province is not practicable.The first Paragraph of the Report being read a second time; and the Questionbeing put that the House do agree with the Committee in the said Paragraph.The House divided.The Yeas went forth.Teller for the Yeas, Mr. Wragg—10.Teller for the Noes, Mr. Manigault—11.So it passed in the Negative.Resolved, (upon the Question) that this House will make provision forthe raising of a Regiment to consist of One Thousand Men; to be employedfor the Relief of the Garrison at Fort Prince George, and to chastize theCherokee Indians for the late barbarous Murders they have committed uponthe Inhabitants of this Province.Resolved, That this House will provide Pay for a Colonel of the saidRegiment at the rate of One hundred and twenty Pounds per Month.Resolved, That this House will provide Pay for a Lieutenant Colonel ofthe said Regiment at the rate of Ninety Pounds per Month.Resolved, That this House will provide Pay for a Major of the said Regimentat the rate of Seventy Pounds per Month.
