MAY 11, 1758197And then the Messenger withdrew.And Mr. Speaker read his Excellencys Message to the House.And the Said Message being read a Second time.Ordered That an Answer be prepared to be Sent to his Excellencys SaidMessage.Then the Councils Amendments to the Bill intitled “an Act vestingAshley Ferry in the Public Treasurer, for the Time being, for the use of thePublic, And for keeping the Causey Leading to the Said Ferry in repair” wereonce read throughout.And being read a Second Time, were disagreed with by the House.And severall other Amendments being agreed by the House to be madeto the Bill.Ordered that a Message be prepared to be Sent to the Council with thesaid Amendments.And Accordingly the following one was Drawn, viz.Honorable Gentlemen,This House being of Opinion that Obliging the Inhabitants on thenorth East side of Ashley river to repair the Causey Leading to the Ferry, &to make the Stands & Shade mentioned in the Bill, & afterwards to keep theSame in Constant repair, will be too heavy a Burthen on the Said Inhabitants,hath disagreed to the Amendments Last proposed by your honours, tobe made to the Bill: But as we think it will be more equal to oblige all theInhabitants of St. Andrews Parish (James Island Excepted) to put the Causeyin repair and to make the Stands & afterwards to Oblige the Inhabitantson the north East side of the River to Keep the Same in repair, we proposethat the Bill be amended in the following manner & we desire your Concurrencetherein, Viz.Page 2, Last Line, Leave out from “required” to “Causey” in the first Lineof the 3d Page & add “to put the.”Page 3, Line 2d, Leave out “Constant” & add “Sufficient.”Same Line, Leave out “And allways.”Same Page, Line 4th, between “River” and “so” add “And after the saidCausey shall be put in good & Sufficient repair & Condition & the Standsmade by the Said Inhabitants as aforesaid, the Same Shall from thence forwardbe Constantly kept in the Like good repair and Condition by all theMale Inhabitants from Sixteen to Sixty years of age, Living in the District,in which the said Ferry is Situate on the North East Side of the Said River.”Same Page, Line 8, Leave out from the Word “Expence” to the End ofthe Clause & add “of putting the Said Causey in good and Sufficient repairand making the Stand as aforesaid, upon the severall Male Inhabitants of thesaid Parish of St. Andrew (James Island Excepted) from Sixteen to Sixty years
