40 COMMONS JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 14, 1757–DECEMBER 9, 1757Tuesday the 29th of November 1757.The Journal of Last Thursdays Proceedings was read.Mr. Middleton reported from the Committee to whom the “Bill establishingcertain Regulations concerning the Soldiery in South Carolina & toprevent their desertion & for the better carrying on His Majestys Service inthe said Province” was Committed, That the Committee had Examin’d theAllegations of the Bill & found the same to be true & had gone through theBill & made Several Amendments thereunto which they had direc[ted] himto report to the House. And he read the Report in his Place & afterwardsdelivered it in at the Clerks Table where the said Amendments were onceread throughout & then a second time One by One. And Several of the saidAmendments were agreed to by the House with amendments to some ofthem & others of them were disagreed with by the House.And several other Amendments were made by the House to the Bill.Ordered that Mr. Gadsden do Carry the Bill to the Council.And then the House adjourn’d till 3 o’Clock afternoon.P.M.Mr. Berresford reported from the Committee to whom The Governorsorders to the Commissary for Supplying the forces now in Charles Town withNecessaries & the Account of the Expence incurred thereby were referr’d. Andto Consider of & report to the House what may be necessairy for the future tofurnish the said forces with, at the Expence of this Province. That the Committeehad Examined the said Papers & had considered of the Matter which theyhad in Charge & had directed him to Report their Opinion thereupon to theHouse & he read the Report in his Place & afterwards delivered it in at theClerk’s Table where the Same was read & is as follows, Viz.That upon a carefull view & inspection of the several Accounts of thesaid Expence laid before them by the Commissary, they find the wholeamount to be £16823:19:5 Current Money to the 25th Instant November.And they are of Opinion the following may be Necessary Allowances infuture for the said Forces at the Public Expence, Viz.Seven Shillings Current Money per Day to each Subaltern Officer, thatis to say Lieutenants & Ensigns actually in Commission in Lieu of all otherallowances.Two Cords of Fire wood per Week for each Company of 100 EffectiveMen Actually in Charles Town from this Time, to the 1st day of April next,& two Cord per Month from that day to the 1st of October.One Pound of Candles per Week, to every Room of Mess of Eight Men,including the several Guard Rooms.
