CJ 211—substantive Criminal Law<br />

Studies the law of crimes, including<br />

the scope, purpose, defnitions, and<br />

classifcations of criminal acts. In addition<br />

to surveying the history and philosophy<br />

of criminal law, signifcant time will<br />

be devoted to the study and analysis of<br />

offenses against the person, offenses<br />

against property, aspects of criminal<br />

liability, jurisdiction, and criminal<br />

defenses such as justifcation, necessity,<br />

entrapment and insanity. NOTE: Repeat of<br />

CJ 111. Prerequisite: CJ 102. (3 semester<br />

CJ 212—Procedural Criminal Law<br />

An examination of the Law of Criminal<br />

Procedure and the constitutional<br />

limitations placed on those charged with<br />

the responsibility of crime control and the<br />

administration of criminal justice in the<br />

United States. Major topics include: the laws<br />

of arrest, search and seizure, confessions,<br />

statements and admissions, trial rights and<br />

civil liabilities of those who deny others their<br />

constitutional rights. Prerequisite: CJ 102. (3<br />

semester hours) Spring<br />

CJ 243—Criminal Justice ethics<br />

A capstone course for the feld of criminal<br />

justice studies. It will synthesize what has<br />

been learned regarding the moral rights,<br />

beliefs, and values in the subject matter<br />

as a whole and refect on the teaching<br />

that has paved the basis for knowledge.<br />

Furthermore, a code of conduct for<br />

criminal justice students will be developed<br />

within the course. Prerequisites: CJ 102<br />

and 6 semester hours of criminal justice.<br />

CJ 295—Criminal Justice Field Study i<br />

An opportunity for students to partake<br />

in a program of observational and<br />

professional experience with a local<br />

criminal justice agency. Students will<br />

be expected to participate in a weekly<br />

seminar and to complete a minimum of<br />

four hours feldwork each week at their<br />

assignment. Permission of instructor is<br />

required. Grading is Satisfactory(S) or<br />

Unsatisfactory (U). Prerequisite: Criminal<br />

Justice major. (3 semester hours) Fall/<br />

CJ 296—Criminal Justice field study ii<br />

A continuation of CJ 295, with<br />

student placement generally being<br />

directed outside <strong>Columbia</strong> and <strong>Greene</strong><br />

Counties. Permission of instructor is<br />

required. Grading is Satisfactory(S) or<br />

Unsatisfactory (U). Prerequisite: Criminal<br />

Justice major. (3 semester hours) Fall/<br />

CJ 298—national Criminal Justice<br />

study<br />

An opportunity for students to learn about<br />

and participate in a program of criminal<br />

justice on a national and local level in the<br />

District of <strong>Columbia</strong> metropolitan area,<br />

including Virginia and Maryland. The<br />

inception, history, and current method of<br />

operation of selected federal and local<br />

agencies will be examined. Permission<br />

of the instructor is required. NOTE:<br />

Trip costs are borne by each student and<br />

include a course fee of $300 to cover<br />

expenses related to the trip. Repeat of<br />

CJ 297. Prerequisite: Students must<br />

have successfully completed six credits<br />

of coursework in Criminal Justice. SO<br />

207 (Criminology) and SO 209 (Juvenile<br />

Delinquency) will also satisfy the<br />

coursework requirement. Permission of<br />

the instructor is required. (1 semester<br />
