BCE to 1700 CE<br />

A survey of political, economic, social,<br />

cultural, and intellectual origins of<br />

Western civilization from the ancient<br />

world until the 1700s. Emphasis is<br />

placed on the rise and fall of classical<br />

civilizations such as Greece and Rome, the<br />

growth of Christianity, the Renaissance,<br />

and the Protestant Reformation. (3<br />

semester hours) Spring/Fall<br />

hi 102—Western Civilizations 1700 to<br />

Present<br />

A survey of Europe and the modern<br />

world from the 1700s to the present.<br />

Emphasis is placed on the historical<br />

evolution and chronology of primarily<br />

European political, religious, cultural,<br />

and institutional aspects during this<br />

period. Exploration of the major events<br />

and transformation of this period, and<br />

focus on the great questions and ideas that<br />

have arisen from these transformations<br />

and in turn shaped the politics,<br />

social organizations, artistic culture,<br />

technological innovations and economies<br />

of Western Civilization. (3 semester<br />

A survey course that begins with an<br />

overview of United States history from<br />

COLUMBIA-GREENE COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2012-2013 CATALOG<br />

colonial times into the 21st century.<br />

The primary emphasis will focus on the<br />

development of a constitutional system<br />

as well as the social and economic<br />

events that helped shape early America.<br />

Topics include the Colonial period,<br />

American Revolution, the ratifcation of<br />

the Constitution, Jacksonian democracy,<br />

the forces that led to the development of<br />

the Civil War and the lingering impact<br />

of the war on contemporary America. (3<br />

semester hours) Fall<br />

Hi 103H—Hnrs: United states<br />

history 1492-1865<br />

This course will cover American history<br />

through the Civil War and reconstruction.<br />

The general themes will be as those<br />

found in HI 103 with emphasis to a<br />

greater extent on the theme of confict<br />

in early America and the ideologies and<br />

temperaments which were at the root of<br />

the different visions Americans had for<br />

their country. This honors course will<br />

utilize primary sources and outside of the<br />

classroom experiences in supplementing<br />

the textbook. Students will study the<br />

lives of common folk as well as political<br />

leaders, and learn what material culture<br />

can tell us about people of the past.<br />

Prerequisite: cumulative GPA of 3.25 or<br />

higher and submission of essay to the<br />

Honors Committee. (3 semester hours)<br />

1865-Present<br />

A survey course that begins with an<br />

overview of United States history from<br />

colonial times into the 21st century. The<br />

primary emphasis will focus on the major<br />

forces that shaped the social, political<br />

and economic developments of post<br />

Civil War America. Topics will include<br />

Reconstruction, westward expansion, the<br />

Industrial Revolution, immigration, the<br />

Great Depression, the world wars, and the<br />

emergence of the United States as a world<br />
