management through Literary Works<br />

Students will examine a variety of<br />

leadership and managerial styles across a<br />

rich selection of literature including plays,<br />

novels, and autobiographies. This is an<br />

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar which<br />

will be team-taught by two professors.<br />

It will satisfy the interdisciplinary<br />

requirement of the Honors Program. It will<br />

also satisfy Humanities elective, General<br />

elective, or Business elective. Prerequisite:<br />

cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and<br />

submission of essay to the Honors<br />

Committee. BU 103 recommended but not<br />

Hs 103—introduction to Human<br />

services<br />

A survey of the history, philosophy, and<br />

development of human services in the<br />

United States. Topics include theoretical<br />

approaches to meeting human needs,<br />

target populations, careers in human<br />

services, and the service delivery system,<br />

with particular emphasis on <strong>Columbia</strong><br />

and <strong>Greene</strong> Counties. This course serves<br />

as an introduction to the Human Services<br />

curriculum and prepares students for<br />

continuation in the program. (3 semester<br />

hours) Fall<br />

Hs 105—interventions in Human<br />

services<br />

A combination of classroom and feld<br />

study to introduce students to the<br />

various roles in human services, to learn<br />

fundamentals of the helping process, and<br />

be acquainted with the nature of care<br />

giving in human-service practice. Students<br />

are required to participate in community<br />

service in a human-service setting.<br />

Prerequisite: HS 103. (3 semester hours)<br />

Hs 110—interviewing techniques<br />

Students will develop skills through<br />

intensive role playing and real-life<br />

interviews in and out of class. Skills<br />

covered include listening, focusing,<br />

attending behavior, maintaining<br />

communication, structuring, confronting,<br />

and observation. Students will also learn<br />

interview structure and process. The<br />

micro-skills hierarchy concept will guide<br />

students through successive steps of<br />

intentional interviewing. Prerequisite: HS<br />

103. (3 semester hours) Spring<br />

Hs 212—<strong>Community</strong> organizing<br />

Examines the feld of human services,<br />

utilizing a community counseling<br />

perspective. Emphasis is placed on<br />

prevention of human services problems<br />

and client advocacy. Focus is on<br />

community organizing strategies to<br />

produce systems changes and community<br />

change. NOTE: Repeat of HS 211.<br />

Prerequisites: HS 103, HS 105, and HS<br />

110. (3 semester hours) Fall<br />

Hs 230—Human services internship i<br />

Students participate in feldwork experience<br />

in a local human service agency for a<br />

total of 135 hours during the semester.<br />

Requirements include keeping a weekly<br />

journal of activities, plus evaluation of<br />

the feldwork itself and the feldwork<br />

experience. Grading is Satisfactory (S)<br />

or Unsatisfactory (U). Prerequisites: HS<br />

105 and HS 110. Corequisite: HS 212. (4<br />

semester hours) Fall<br />

HUmAnities<br />

HU 113—World mythology<br />

An in-depth study of various myths<br />

and legends from classical Greece and<br />

Rome and selected other-world cultures.<br />

Mythical patterns, character types,<br />

and themes are studied as well as the<br />

relationship of myth to art and literature.<br />
