Honors stUdies ProGrAm<br />

GrAdUAtion reqUirements<br />

1. A minimum of 12 semester hours of<br />

honors level courses, including the<br />

following:<br />

One honors course in the student’s feld<br />

of study.<br />

One honors interdisciplinary course.<br />

One honors general education course.<br />

One honors course of student’s<br />

choosing.<br />

AND<br />

2. A minimum of a B grade in each<br />

honors course.<br />

AND<br />

3. A minimum of 3.25 cumulative GPA<br />

at the time of graduation from the<br />

college.<br />

AND<br />

4. Participation in extracurricular and<br />

community service activities is<br />

encouraged.<br />

Honors enriCHed CoUrse<br />

Students may choose to create a project or<br />

body of work to elevate a regular course<br />

to Honors level. The student brainstorms<br />

with the professor to design the project.<br />

A written contract, along with a writing<br />

sample, is submitted to the Director of<br />

Honors Studies during the third week<br />

of the semester. The project must be<br />

approved by the Director of Honors<br />

Studies and the Vice President and Dean<br />

of Academic Affairs. Prerequisite for<br />

Honors Enriched Courses: cumulative<br />

GPA of 3.25 or higher and submission of<br />

essay to the Director of Honors Studies.<br />

Honors indePendent stUdY<br />

This opportunity allows a student and<br />

professor to cooperatively design and<br />

undertake a course equivalent to Honorslevel<br />

study within a specifc discipline.<br />

A written proposal from the student and<br />

the professor must be submitted by the<br />

third week of the semester. The proposal<br />

must be approved by the Director of<br />

Honors Studies, the professors’ Division<br />

Chairperson, and the Vice President and<br />

Dean of Academic Affairs. Prerequisite<br />

for Honors Independent Study: cumulative<br />

GPA of 3.25 or higher and submission of<br />

essay to the Director of Honors Studies.<br />

foreiGn LAnGUAGe Honor<br />

soCieties<br />

Two foreign language honor societies<br />

have been established to recognize those<br />

students who have achieved excellence in<br />

their Spanish and Italian studies.<br />

Sigma Delta Mu is a Spanish national<br />

honor society of which Alpha Chapter was<br />

the frst to be founded in New York State.<br />

Alpha Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega was<br />

created at the college through the support<br />

of the American Association of Teachers<br />

of Italian (AATI) and is the only society of<br />

its kind in New York State.<br />

Admission for membership to either<br />

Sigma Delta Mu or Alpha Chi Omega<br />

calls for the same academic requirements:<br />

A student must have completed at least<br />

one semester of college Spanish or one<br />

semester of college Italian and be enrolled<br />

in the second semester or higher, have a<br />

GPA of 3.0 or better in foreign language<br />

courses, and have an overall GPA of 2.67<br />

(B-) or higher.
