sC 206—instrumental Analysis<br />

This course provides exposure to the<br />

fundamental thinking, hardware, and<br />

techniques as performed in a chemical<br />

laboratory. The following methods will be<br />

highlighted: visible, ultraviolet, and infrared<br />

spectroscopy, atomic absorption, nuclear<br />

magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass<br />

spectroscopy, and gas and high pressure<br />

liquid chromatography. An introduction to<br />

microscopy, selected electronic and electrical<br />

concepts to instrumentation will also be<br />

included. Prerequisite: CH 102. (3 lecture<br />

hours/3 lab hours) (4 semester hours) Spring<br />

sC 210—environmental field studies<br />

Students will be exposed to actual<br />

feld studies situations. They will be<br />

involved with research projects run by<br />

organizations such as The Department<br />

of Environmental Conservation and the<br />

Cornell Cooperative Extension. Students<br />

will be required to perform 135 hours of<br />

feld work. Grading is Satisfactory (S) or<br />

Unsatisfactory (U). Prerequisite: BI 113 (3<br />

sL 110—Cultural diversity<br />

An introduction to cultural pluralism in<br />

the United States by closely investigating<br />

issues in American culture such as power,<br />

privilege, social class, gender, sexual<br />

orientation, race, and ethnicity. The twofold<br />

goal is to increase information about<br />

cultural diversity issues and thereby increase<br />

sensitivity, understanding, and appreciation<br />

of diversity. Diversity will be examined from<br />

the perspectives of psychology, sociology,<br />

and anthropology, the problems presented by<br />

COLUMBIA-GREENE COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2012-2013 CATALOG<br />

cultural differences in the United States, and<br />

the consequences for individuals and groups<br />

who live in a pluralistic society.<br />

Sl 115—Confict resolution: Theory<br />

and Practice<br />

This course will focus on the<br />

understanding of interpersonal and<br />

intergroup confict. The signifcant factors<br />

leading to confict and strategies for<br />

confict intervention will be examined.<br />

Students will gain skills in de-escalating<br />

confictual interactions, applying confict<br />

analysis, confict prevention and confict<br />

management. (3 semester hours)<br />

sL 120—introduction to outdoor<br />

education<br />

This is an experiential-based course<br />

that introduces students to the value and<br />

practical application of experiential/<br />

adventure/outdoor-based learning.<br />

Students will experience activities that<br />

include initiatives and games as well<br />

as low- and high-challenge course<br />

elements. The focus will be on leadership,<br />

cooperation, esteem building and<br />

development of trust. (2 lecture hours/2<br />

lab hours) (3 semester hours) Fall/Spring<br />

sL 125—ropes Course facilitation<br />

Challenge course and initiatives<br />

facilitation will enable students to<br />

facilitate team building initiatives<br />

and ropes course experiences. Skills<br />

developed include group facilitation and<br />

the technical skills of rope work, belaying,<br />

and rescues. Skills are within industry<br />

standards established by the Association<br />

for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT)<br />

and meet the requirements to enable the<br />

student to take the certifcation test from<br />

ACCT authorized agencies. (2 lecture<br />

hours, 2 lab hours) (3 semester hours)<br />
