PY 210—Learning disabilities<br />

A general survey of major learning<br />

disabilities, their classifcation, etiology,<br />

and prognosis. Special education<br />

legislation, service procurement and<br />

provisions, and some methods of<br />

instruction for children with learning<br />

disabilities are also covered. Prerequisite:<br />

PY 101. (3 semester hours) Spring<br />

PY 212—Behavioral Change<br />

Principles of operant conditioning and<br />

application of these principles to modify<br />

behavior. Focus will be on practical<br />

procedures for changing behavior in the<br />

natural environment. Prerequisite: PY 101.<br />

(3 semester hours) Spring<br />

PY 215—theories of Personality<br />

Designed to investigate the nature of the<br />

personality, how it develops, and why<br />

we differ and act similarly. The goal is to<br />

expose students to a variety of approaches<br />

to personality, including psychoanalytical,<br />

behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and<br />

traits. The ultimate goal is to give students<br />

the tools with which to derive their<br />

own answers about human personality<br />

and behavior. Prerequisite: PY 101. (3<br />

semester hours) Spring<br />

PY 217—Sport Psychology<br />

Examines the major psychological theories<br />

related to sport and exercise behavior.<br />

Topics covered will include the history<br />

and development of sport psychology, the<br />

personality and motivation of the athlete,<br />

arousal and anxiety, social infuences,<br />

intervention techniques, and counseling/<br />

clinical issues that are especially relevant to<br />

athletes. Prerequisite: PY 101. (3 semester<br />

hours) Fall<br />

PY 224—Leadership and Group<br />

dynamics<br />

This course explores the dynamics of<br />

human interaction within a group setting.<br />

Participants will be examining theories,<br />

concepts and practices associated with<br />

COLUMBIA-GREENE COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2012-2013 CATALOG<br />

group process. The main purpose of<br />

the course is to develop the skills and<br />

knowledge to effectively lead and work<br />

in groups. There will be an emphasis<br />

on interpersonal communication skills,<br />

awareness of personal leadership styles,<br />

and how individual member behavior<br />

contributes to group development. In<br />

addition, theories of group development<br />

will be a major focus. NOTE: This is a<br />

repeat of PY 223. Prerequisites: PY 101<br />

and/or SL 120. (3 semester hours) Spring<br />

PY 230—Criminal Psychology<br />

An examination of the dynamics of the<br />

physiological, cognitive and learning<br />

factors involved in criminal behavior from<br />

a psychological perspective. Criminal<br />

profling, forensic analysis, victim<br />

profling and victim analysis will also<br />

be discussed. Prerequisite: PY 101. (3<br />

semester hours) Fall/Spring<br />

PY 292—Educational Psychology<br />

This course is an in-depth study of<br />

fundamental concepts and principles of<br />

psychology that have broad applicability<br />

to classroom practice. Topics include the<br />

nature of learning as it relates to children<br />

and adolescents; cognitive and linguistic<br />

development; personal, social and moral<br />

development; individual and group<br />

differences; special needs; instructional<br />

strategies; and classroom management.<br />

Case study analysis will be used to<br />

translate theory into practice. Prerequisite:<br />

PY 101. (3 semester hours) Spring<br />

PY 299—Abnormal Psychology<br />

Examines the dimensions, theories, and<br />

fndings in human psychopathology<br />

with emphasis on cultural considerations<br />

when defning abnormality. Topics<br />

include concepts of abnormality, theories<br />

of classifcation, disorders, etiology,<br />

assessment, and treatment. Prerequisite:<br />

PY 101. (3 semester hours) Fall/Spring<br />
