162 THE COMPANIONS.Cavalry Companion.The cavalry was of three classes. First came the heavyMacedonian horsemen, each ofwhom was accompanied by amounted servant or squire, and originally by two or threeslaves, though Philip, and again later Alexander, found itnecessary to cut down this number to one. They were volunteers,*the best men ofthe nation.It was Philip who had formed this body of young nobles,and taken the greatest pride in giving them the highest militaryas well as the most enlightened polite education andtraining. They thus became fit both for command and forstatesmanship and diplomatic service. They wore helmetand complete scale-armor, and carried a shield, thrusting-pikeand sword. The horse had head-piece and breastplate, alsoof scale-armor. These were the so-called cavalry hetairai,Companions or brothers-in-arms. The first squadron constitutedthe royal body-guard. The hetairai were constantlycompeting under the eye of the king for glory and reputation.They were his right hand. No Asiatic cavahy could

Alexander'sbattles were uniformly decided by them.The marchesthey could execute were well exemplified in the pursuit ofDarius, when they made three thousand three hundred stades— three hundred and sixty-six miles — in eleven days, undera burning sun, and part way acrossa desert country withoutwater. The cavalry Companions were under Philotas, thehippareh, son ofParmenio and brother of Nicanor, who commandedthe hypaspists. Eight of these ile accompaniedAlexander into Asia, severally under Clitus, Glaucias, Ariston,Sopolis, Heracleides,Demetrius, Meleager, and Hegelochus,each some two hundred or more strong.Clitus' ile wasthe agema of cavalry, which Alexander was wont to lead inperson.There appear to have been sixteen ile in all, from sixteendistricts, each varying from one hundred and fifty to two hundredand fifty men. Whether this was confined to the agema,or not, is not known. But the Companions were a strongpower in both army and state, as well as unquestionably thesocial leaders in the society of the court.
