The antagonism of Callisthenes, Alexander issaid to have ascribed to his old teacher, Aristotle, whom henow remembered with feelings of not unmixed affection.These are among the pages which are well quickly shut. Sorestlessunder freedom of speech had Alexander become, ithas been observed, that it is hard to say whether his periodsof rest were not more dangerous to his friends than hismarches and campaigns to his enemies.Perhaps all this is out of place in a volume which makesno pretense to being a history of the man or king Alexanderor of his times, but is merely a narration of the deeds of thesoldier, as illustrative of the growth of the art of war.
