310 THE BATTLE OPENS.Darius awaited the attack of the Greeks, confiding in hisnumbers, and intending, as above said, that his cavalry should,by defeating Alexander's, break the latter's left wing, andtake the whole army in reverse. Thus the strong right flankof each army was opposed to the other's weaker left. Alexander'ssending the Thessalian cavalry to his left had to adegree remedied this evil in the Macedonian army, for theThessalians were wonderful fighters ; but Darius had not correctedthe corresponding weakness of his own left. His flyingwing of Cardaces had disgracefully failed him.The defensive attitude of the Persian king gave Alexander'stroops the impression that Darius was lacking in courage,and this still more heightened then- own. There was ageneral shout to be led to the attack, and Alexander gave theorder to advance. The tone in which troops cheer is indicativeof what breeds victory or defeat. Here it was unmistakablyfor victory. As the line slowly and with the steadinessof parade moved forward, Alexander rode in front of theline, calling on the men to do their duty, saluting each brigadeof the phalanx by its name, individually addressing eachchieftain, and rousing all to heroic tension. He was receivedwith loud huzzas, and his noble presence and confident bearingacted as a stimulant on every soldier in the ranks.The river had to be crossed, but this difficulty only raisedthe spirits of the men who had fought their way across theGranicus. The north bank of the Pinarus was in most partssteep ; where it was low, Darius had caused a stockade to beerected. The water was everywhere fordable.The battle was about to open. The enthusiasm of theMacedonians rose to boiling point. In order to keep the lineintact and free from wavering, the phalangites advancedslowly to the sound of music, as they were wont to do on pai-ade,with measured tread and soldierly bearing, until, reach-
ing the zone ofA SHARP ATTACK. 311darts, at a preconcertecl signal, and headed byAlexander and the agema, they took the double-quick, anddashed into the river with the shout which their enemies hadalways heard with dread, and which the hills sent reverberatingback to the sea.
