2009 – 2013 FINA SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING MANUALFOR JUDGES, COACHES & REFEREESSECTION III12. JUDGING MANNER OF PRESENTATIONManner of Presentation is ‘the way in which the swimmer presents the routine <strong>for</strong> theinspection or consideration of the viewers’. It is a very important part of the score. InSolo it counts <strong>for</strong> 30% but drops to 20% <strong>for</strong> Duet and Teams. Manner of Presentationhas both objective and subjective components.Manner of presentation is more than a smile. It involves the face and use of thewhole body. The swimmers must demonstrate they that they are in total commandthroughout. Total command requires a completeness of per<strong>for</strong>mance thatdemonstrates confidence, poise and ef<strong>for</strong>tlessness; a high energy level, bothphysical and emotional; a consistency of per<strong>for</strong>mance with the maintenance of anillusion of ease throughout. There must be responsiveness to the emotionsexpressed by the music and appropriate to the choreography along with the ability tocommunicate with sincerity and enjoyment to viewers so they are drawn into and feela part of the per<strong>for</strong>mance. Routines that receive top scores in this category showdynamism and strength yet are also fluid, graceful and captivating. They have anallure, an appeal to the senses, a magnetism; in short, they have charisma.Judges consider:1. COMPLETENESS of per<strong>for</strong>mance! Use of whole body, body language:Superior athletes will demonstrate excellent carriage and posture and beable to display and make use of body language in head and torso positions,leg, arm and hand movements; and facial expressions, to carry a messageto the viewers.! Focus of body and face:Look <strong>for</strong> eye contact and use of the head. The focus can be erect andupright, with straight or squared shoulders or it may be soft, curving, turningwith tilting shoulders; and appropriate facial expressions to carry amessage to the viewers..! Use of varied moods:The athlete is able to demonstrate a desired mood: love, power, joy,sorrow, anger, pain, etc. which allow the audience to also feel the emotionsheard in the music.2. AURA OF TOTAL COMMAND, confidence!
