The difficulty lies <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g those retailer needsand identify<strong>in</strong>g the right products where develop<strong>in</strong>g country producers <strong>of</strong>ten lack the skills to deal with the highdemands <strong>of</strong> the export markets and access to capital and bus<strong>in</strong>ess expertise. These factors collectively present aformidable barrier <strong>in</strong> entry to sophisticated markets. At the other end <strong>of</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong>, retailers <strong>of</strong>ten lack theability to be able to reliably source quality products that are required.Farmer societies provide a good opportunity to l<strong>in</strong>k up with retailers follow<strong>in</strong>g the exist<strong>in</strong>g controls that ensure thatbasic requirements <strong>of</strong> markets, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g social and environmental responsibility and food safety, are <strong>in</strong> place:- Legally registered farms- Traceability back to shrimp farms and hatcheries through proper record keep<strong>in</strong>g and use <strong>of</strong> GIS maps.- Societies follow BMPs to control the hygiene and safety <strong>of</strong> shrimp produced.- Society produced shrimp are safe- No use <strong>of</strong> Antibiotics at any stage <strong>in</strong> society farms:Organic Cluster Certification:National Centre for susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>Aquaculture</strong> (NaCSA) and India Organic <strong>Aquaculture</strong> Project (IOAP), MPEDA tookup Organic Fresh Water Prawn (M. rosenbergii) farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> two societies <strong>of</strong> West Godavari District <strong>of</strong> AndhraPradesh. Total <strong>of</strong> 27 farmers, from Sri Venkateswara Aqua Farmers Welfare Society, Matsyapuri and SriSa<strong>in</strong>adha Aqua Farmers welfare Society, Velivela were <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the project cover<strong>in</strong>g 31.15 ha. area. These twosociety farmers were already follow<strong>in</strong>g traditional prawn farm<strong>in</strong>g practices without us<strong>in</strong>g any Chemicals andAntibiotics <strong>in</strong> their farms. These farmers were technically supported by NaCSA, which <strong>in</strong>volved implementation <strong>of</strong>Better Management Practices through its field <strong>of</strong>ficials and also through tra<strong>in</strong>ed Society Coord<strong>in</strong>ator to m<strong>in</strong>imizethe disease risks and improve food safety. This work was carried out for last 5 years.Once the project started supply <strong>of</strong> critical organic <strong>in</strong>puts like seed and feed is taken up by IOAP. IOAP and NaCSAteam conducted several meet<strong>in</strong>gs and successfully coord<strong>in</strong>ated activities among all the key stake holders likehatchery, feed mill, farmer society and process<strong>in</strong>g plant. Prior to the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> farm operations hatchery andfeed mill were certified by Naturland for implement<strong>in</strong>g Organic Standards. Later two societies applied to Naturlandfor Organic Cluster Certification <strong>in</strong> the prescribed format through IOAP.Preparation <strong>of</strong> Internal Control System:Societies were managed by Manag<strong>in</strong>g committee and controlled by Internal control System (ICS). ICS wasdeveloped by societies to implement Organic Internal Standards prepared <strong>in</strong> consultation with farmers by theproject team consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> IOAP and NaCSA <strong>of</strong>ficials along with the consultant for the project. Farmers, MPEDA,NaCSA <strong>of</strong>ficials and other stakeholders <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the organic project were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the ICS. With the help <strong>of</strong>knowledge acquired from tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, farmer societies prepared Internal control system along with NaCSA.Implementation <strong>of</strong> Standards:Coord<strong>in</strong>ation meet<strong>in</strong>gs among the society farmers were conducted regularly to coord<strong>in</strong>ate all the activities <strong>of</strong>organic project. All decisions on the crop activity was reviewed dur<strong>in</strong>g the meet<strong>in</strong>gs and it was properly recorded<strong>in</strong> society m<strong>in</strong>utes book. Presidents <strong>of</strong> two societies led the Internal Control System team as ICS projectcoord<strong>in</strong>ators <strong>in</strong> the respective societies and they were key contact persons <strong>in</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g the project.Cluster Certification:Societies implemented the organic standards under the supervision <strong>of</strong> MPEDA and NaCSA. Periodic meet<strong>in</strong>gswere conducted to emphasize the organic farm<strong>in</strong>g standards to every farmer. Internal Control System was111
