With better <strong>in</strong>formed farmers, the spread<strong>in</strong>g and awareness build<strong>in</strong>g about the Society concept, more farmers areapproach<strong>in</strong>g NaCSA to help them organize as societies. Details <strong>of</strong> farmer Societies organized to date are given <strong>in</strong>table below.State Total OfFarmers Area (ha)SocietiesAndhra Pradesh 229 5424 5483Orissa 28 750 1609Tamil Nadu 9 215 185Karnataka 11 249 245Grand Total277 6638 7522ConclusionThe organization <strong>of</strong> small scale shrimp farmers <strong>in</strong> India is (a) empower<strong>in</strong>g small-scale farmers, (b) <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gstakeholder <strong>in</strong>teraction and <strong>in</strong>volvement with<strong>in</strong> the clusters, and (c) is an ideal model for small scale farmers tomeet market requirements. The model is <strong>of</strong> a self propagat<strong>in</strong>g nature and most <strong>of</strong> all it is contribut<strong>in</strong>g tosusta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> small scale shrimp farmers livelihood <strong>in</strong> India. This example best exemplifies how small scaleshrimp farmers could rema<strong>in</strong> economically viable and are able to comply with the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g demands <strong>of</strong>sophisticated markets, and most <strong>of</strong> all achieve susta<strong>in</strong>ability. NaCSA by effectively, engag<strong>in</strong>g with the thousands<strong>of</strong> aquaculture producers <strong>in</strong> India and help<strong>in</strong>g them to develop farm level plans for susta<strong>in</strong>able development withthe <strong>in</strong>volvement and contribution <strong>of</strong> the many players <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong>, from producers to consumershas provided strength to the small farmers for economic and social advancement. This process will be furtherexpanded until all small scale aquaculture farmers <strong>in</strong> India gets the benefit. NaCSA now makes considerableefforts <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g farmers with better market access, bank credit and help<strong>in</strong>g farmers avail Government supportprovid<strong>in</strong>g a much wider set <strong>of</strong> tools to <strong>in</strong>fluence farmers decision mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> such matters. It is envisaged <strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>gyears there will be a <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> NaCSA on societies which can be used for regulated development <strong>of</strong>farmers and their societies.Acknowledgements:Thanks to Ms. Leena Nair, IAS, President, NaCSA and Chairperson <strong>of</strong> MPEDA and Mr. B.
