SUMMARY
The Detroit Lions improved to 2-1 on the season following a 19-7
victory in Week 3 vs. Green Bay. In the first division game of the
season the Lions defense stepped up big again to lead them to
victory. On the Packers’ second play of their first possession, DT
Nick Fairley stripped Packers RB Eddie Lacy, causing a fumble. FS
Don Carey was there to scoop and score to put Detroit up 7-0 in
the first quarter with 12 minutes to go. Green Bay would tie the
game with under a minute left to go in the first when QB Aaron
Rodgers connected with TE Andrew Quarless on a 10-yard pass.
After an unfortunate injury to LB Stephen Tulloch, LB DeAndre
Levy and the rest of the Lions defense stepped up their play for
their fallen teammate. With the ball on their own one-yard line,
the Packers tried run it out as Levy made the play in the end zone
on Lacy to get the safety, putting Detroit up 9-7 in the second
quarter. Detroit would add to its lead with a 30-yard field goal by K
Nate Freese with under seven minutes to go in the second quarter
to go up 12-7. Coming out the half, the dominance by the Lions
defense continued as they didn’t allow the Packers to score in the
final three quarters of the game. With just under 11 minutes to go
in the fourth quarter, RB Reggie Bush put Detroit in a commanding
lead with a 26-yard touchdown run to seal the win, 19-7.
SUMMARY
The Detroit Lions improved to 3-1 on the season following a 24-17
win in Week 4 over the New York Jets. After early success from
New York in the running game, the Lions were able to stall the
Jets’ first drive and force them to attempt a 27-yard field goal
from K Nick Folk to put the Jets up 3-0. Detroit would respond
with a field goal of their own with under six minutes to go with
a 51-yard field goal by K Alex Henerey to tie the game up. After
battling back and forth defensively with under 10 minutes to go
in the second, QB Matthew Stafford hooked up with WR Jeremy
Ross for a 59-yard bomb to increase Detroit’s lead to 10-3. After
another defensive stop the Lions’ two-minute offense would go
to work. Detroit put together a five-play drive that ended with
Stafford connecting with rookie TE Eric Ebron for a 16-yard score,
putting the Lions up a commanding 17-3 heading into the half. In
the third quarter Jets QB Geno Smith would connect with WR Eric
Decker for an 11-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 17-10.
Detroit responded quickly, putting together a 14-play, 90-yard
drive ending with Stafford scoring on a one-yard scramble to put
the Lions up 24-10. With under 10 minutes to play the Jets would
score on a 35-yard scramble by RB Chris Johnson to narrow the
score to 24-17. After another defensive stop the Lions were able to
chew up the last 3:41 of the game. WR Golden Tate led the team
with a career-high eight receptions and 116 yards receiving.
