SERIES NOTES
‣ ¾The Lions are 4-2 in home games
(2-0 at Ford Field) against the
Chiefs and 1-5 in games played in
Kansas City.
‣ ¾In the inaugural meeting—the
1971 Thanksgiving Day classic—K
Errol Mann contributed three field
goals while QB Greg Landry threw
touchdown passes toTE Charlie
Sanders and WR Earl McCullouch in
a 32-21 Lions’ win. RB Ed Podolak
scored all three touchdowns for
the Chiefs.
‣ ¾In the teams’ first regular season
meeting at the Silverdome, Detroit
dominated defensively and claimed
a 27-10 Thanksgiving Day win in
1981. The Lions held the Chiefs’
top-ranked rushing attack to just
116 yards, and registered five
sacks.
‣ ¾The Lions hold a 6-4 preseason
edge in the series against the
Chiefs, and have won five of the last
six preseason matchups. The two
teams met on August 23, 1975 in an
exhibition affair that kicked off the
opening of the Pontiac Silverdome.
Detroit won the contest 27-24.
‣ ¾Kansas City made their first trip to
Ford Field on December 23, 2007,
with the Lions claiming a 25-20
victory.
‣ ¾In Detroit’s 2011 home opener
on September 18, the Lions set
a regular season franchise record
with a 45-point margin of victory
as they defeated the Chiefs 48-3.
K Jason Hanson set an all-time
NFL record by playing in his 297th
career game for the Lions, which
marks the most games played by
one player for one team.
