SERIES NOTES
‣ ¾The Lions and Panthers faced off
in their inaugural contest October
24, 1999. Detroit visited Carolina’s
Ericsson Stadium (renamed Bank of
America Stadium) and handed the
Panthers a 24-9 loss. The Panthers
made five trips inside the Lions’
five-yard line, and the Detroit
defense forced two turnovers and
yielded only three field goals.
‣ ¾The contest was also the first of
two straight games in 1999 where
Detroit’s defense did not yield a
touchdown. That accomplishment
marked the first time since 1983
that the Lions have kept opponents
out of the end zone in back-to-back
games (45-3 win vs. Pittsburgh
November 24, 1983 and 13-2 win
vs. Minnesota December 5, 1983).
‣ ¾The Panthers evened the series
record at 1-1 with a 31-7 home
victory on September 15, 2002.
‣ ¾Despite having both a fumble
return and a punt return go for
touchdowns, the Lions fell short
at the eventual NFC Champion
Panthers, 21-14, on December
14, 2003.
‣ ¾LB Boss Bailey (34 yards) and S
Kenoy Kennedy (64 yards) each
returned interceptions back for
touchdowns in the Lions lastminute
21-20 loss against Carolina
at Ford Field on October 16, 2005.
The last time the Lions had two
interceptions for touchdowns in a
game was at Seattle October 24,
1976 when Levi Johnson and Lem
Barney both returned interceptions
for touchdowns.
‣ ¾After a sluggish start against
Carolina on November 20, 2011,
the Lions overcame a 17-point
deficit to defeat the Panthers 49-
35 behind QB Matthew Stafford’s
5 touchdown passes, all to five
different receivers. Just recently
re-acquired, RB Kevin Smith rushed
for a career-high 140 yards (201
total yards), along with 2 rushing
and 1 receiving touchdowns.
