SUMMARY
The Detroit Lions surrendered a narrow 14-17 loss to the Buffalo
Bills in Week 5. The Lions had the lead early after QB Matthew
Stafford connected with WR Golden Tate on a nine-yard pass
to put Detroit up 7-0. Early in the second quarter, veteran CB
Rashean Mathis picked off Bills QB Kyle Orton and returned it 40
yards to give the Lions a commanding 14-0 lead. Buffalo would
not go away after missed opportunities by Detroit would allow
the Bills to scratch their way back into the game. Bills K Dan
Carpenter would knock in one field goal in the second and third
quarters, bringing them within eight points heading into the fourth.
With under 10 minutes to go, Orton would connect with TE Chris
Gragg on a two-yard pass that ended with a score as Buffalo
would convert the two-point conversion. After a missed field goal
by the Lions, Carpenter hit a 58-yard field goal with six seconds
remaining to end the game. Detroit only allowed 49 total rushing
yards and LB DeAndre Levy led the way with a game-high 13
tackles, his third-consecutive game with 10 or more tackles.
SUMMARY
With a 17-3 win over the Vikings in Week 6 the Lions improved
to 4-2 on the season. QB Matthew Stafford connected with RB
Theo Riddick on a nine-yard slant to put Detroit up seven in the
first quarter. In the second, Detroit would extend its lead to 10
when newly-signed K Matt Prater knocked in a 52-yard field goal.
The Lions offense would add another score in the fourth when RB
Joique Bell charged in a one-yard touchdown run to put Detroit
up 17-0 and in complete control of the game. Vikings K Blair Wash
made a 40-yard field goal late in the fourth to make it 17-3. The
Lions defense dominated the game against the Vikings. In the
Lions’ 17-3 win at Minnesota, the Lions defense generated eight
total sacks against the Vikings. Eight sacks marked the most in
a game for the Lions since accumulating eight vs. Indianapolis
November 23, 1997. The Lions defense held the Minnesota Vikings
to just three points, marking the lowest tally allowed on the road
by the Lions since they forced a shutout at Tampa Bay, 27-0,
September 29, 1996. Allowing just three points to Minnesota
marked the fourth-straight game the Lions allowed no more than
17 points in a game. The Lions generated eight team sacks and
three interceptions. The last time the Lions registered 8+ sacks
and 3+ interceptions in a game was at Philadelphia November 18,
1986 (11 sacks, three interceptions). LB DeAndre Levy led the
defense with a team-high seven tackles, while LB Tahir Whitehead
got his first and second career interceptions.
