SERIES NOTES
‣ ¾The Lions won each of the first
three meetings between the two
teams (all home games), but have
dropped six of the past seven
contests.
‣ ¾Detroit recorded a 34-20 victory
over the Chargers in the first
meeting of the series on October
22, 1972. RB Mel Farr ran for two
touchdowns and gained 96 yards
on 22 carries, helping the Lions
rack up 182 yards on the ground.
QB Greg Landry also rushed for a
touchdown and added 151 passing
yards with a touchdown strike
going to WR Larry Walton, who
finished with seven catches for
101 yards.
‣ ¾Detroit fell to the Chargers, 27-
24, on September 20, 1984 at
Jack Murphy Stadium (renamed
Qualcomm Stadium). RB Billy
Sims ran for two touchdowns and
119 yards, including an 81-yard
touchdown scamper. Lions QB
Gary Danielson matched Chargers
Hall of Fame QB Dan Fouts every
step of the way, completing 20-of-
25 attempts for 269 yards, while
Fouts was 22-of-35 for 268 yards.
The Chargers forged to a 24-7
halftime lead, but Detroit scored
two third-quarter touchdowns to
narrow the gap to 24-21.
‣ ¾With a 38-10 win over San Diego
at Ford Field on December 24,
2011, the Lions clinched their first
playoff berth since 1999. The team
was led by QB Matthew Stafford
who completed 29-of-36 passes
for 373 yards. His completion
percentage (80.6) and passer rating
(137.6) were both career highs. His
rating also set a franchise singlegame
record by a quarterback who
attempted 35 passes.
