SUMMARY
In dramatic fashion, the Detroit Lions mounted a comeback and
defeated the New Orleans Saints 24-23 in Week 7, improving to
5-2 on the season. The Saints would strike first when QB Drew
Brees connected with FB Austin Johnson on a 13-yard score.
The Lions would respond with under six minutes to go when K
Matt Prater knocked in a 21-yard field goal. As time was expiring
in the first half Saints K Shayne Graham converted on a 27-yard
field goal to put New Orleans up 10-3 at halftime. Things would
continue to go New Orleans’ way early in the third as Brees
hooked up with WR Kenny Stills on a 46-yard pass to push the
Saints lead to 17-3. Detroit would respond with a score of their
own when RB Joique Bell pounded in a one-yard run to bring the
Lions within a touchdown. With less than 14 minutes to go in the
game, the Saints extended their lead in the fourth when Graham
knocked in two field goals to go up 23-10 on Detroit. The Lions
would not go away however, as QB Matthew Stafford connected
with WR Golden Tate on a 73-yard score to bring Detroit within six
points with under four minutes to play. The Lions defense would
come up huge when S Glover Quin picked off Brees and gave the
Lions offense a shot to win the game. With less than two minutes
to play Stafford would connect with WR Corey Fuller on a gamewinning
five-yard touchdown to put Detroit up 24-23. This was
Fuller’s first career touchdown.
SUMMARY
For the second consecutive week the Detroit Lions mounted a
comeback on their way to defeating the Atlanta Falcons in Week
8. The game was part of the NFL International Series and played
at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The Falcons got out
to a quick lead as QB Matt Ryan connected with RB DaVonta
Freeman on a seven-yard pass to put the Falcons up seven. Ryan
then followed up on the next drive with a one-yard TD pass to
TE Bear Pascoe to extend the Falcons’ lead to 14-0. RB Steven
Jackson would add another score on a one-yard run to put the
Falcons up 21-0 heading into the half. Lions K Matt Prater got
Detroit on the board with a 22-yard field goal on the team’s first
drive of the second half. With less than five minutes to play in the
third quarter, QB Matt Stafford hooked up with WR Golden Tate
on a 59-yard pitch and catch, bringing Detroit within 11. Prater
would knock in a 20-yard field goal to cut the lead to one score
as the Lions trailed 21-13. After another defensive stop, Stafford
would connect with RB Theo Riddick for a five-yard touchdown,
but the offense was unable to convert the two-point conversion.
With under two minutes to go the Lions were able to drive the
ball down to the Falcons 30 yard line following a defensive stop
on third down that gave the Lions possession. Prater converted
his third field goal of the season, this time from 48 yards, as time
expired to give the Lions their third consecutive win.
