SERIES NOTES
‣ ¾Aside from the NFL’s recent
expansion additions (Baltimore,
Carolina, Houston and
Jacksonville), the nine meetings
between the Lions and Bills is the
fewest number of games the Lions
have played against any opponent.
‣ ¾Two of the nine games have been
played on Thanksgiving Day, with
the Lions winning both outings.
Detroit won the first Turkey Day
game between the two clubs 27-14
November 25, 1976 and the second
Thanksgiving Day affair 35-21 on
November 24, 1994.
‣ ¾In the 1976 meeting, Bills RB
O.J. Simpson put on one of the
greatest individual performances
in pro football history as he rushed
for a then-NFL record 273 yards.
Simpson’s historic Thanksgiving
Day performance wasn’t enough as
the Lions prevailed 27-14.
‣ ¾Bills late owner Ralph C. Wilson
grew up in Detroit and at one
time was a Lions’ shareholder. He
attended the University of Michigan
law school, was the Chairman of
Ralph C. Wilson Industries and
resided in Grosse Pointe Shores,
Mich.
‣ ¾The Lions and Bills have met each
other in the preseason each year
since 2002, including the 2014
preseason on August 28 with the
Lions winning 23-0. Overall, the
teams have played 34 times in the
preseason, with Detroit holding
a 22-11-1 edge in the preseason
series.
