Rule 81<br />

“1. In a mixed gender prison, the part that is set<br />

aside for women detainees must be under the<br />

authority of a woman who should have the<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>dy of the keys for that part of the prison.<br />

“2. Male staff members must not, unless<br />

accompanied by a female staff member, enter<br />

the part of the prison set aside for women.<br />

“3. Women prisoners must be attended and<br />

supervised only by women staff members.<br />

While male staff members, particularly doc<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

and teachers, will not be prevented from<br />

carrying out their professional duties in prisons<br />

or parts of prisons set aside for women, they<br />

must be accompanied by female staff.” 291<br />

Allocation <strong>to</strong> a prison close <strong>to</strong> home.<br />

‣ Women should be allocated <strong>to</strong> prisons close <strong>to</strong> their<br />

homes, taking account of caretaking responsibilities,<br />

family contact and women’s own preferences, 292 and<br />

the place where they will undertake their social<br />

rehabilitation. 293<br />

Assistance on admission.<br />

‣ Rule 2 of the Bangkok Rules recognizes that women<br />

are particularly vulnerable on admission <strong>to</strong><br />

detention, and should therefore be provided with:<br />

• Facilities <strong>to</strong> contact relatives;<br />

• Access <strong>to</strong> legal advice;<br />

• Information about prison rules and regulations<br />

and the prison regime;<br />

• Advice on where <strong>to</strong> seek language help when<br />

required; and<br />
