Enslavement;<br />

Deportation or forcible transfer of population;<br />

Enforced disappearance of persons;<br />

Imprisonment in violation of fundamental rules of<br />

international law;<br />

Torture;<br />

Rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced<br />

pregnancy and enforced sterilization; and<br />

Persecution against any identifiable group on<br />

political, racial, national, ethnic, cultural, religious,<br />

gender or other grounds. 212<br />

War crimes: international armed conflict<br />

War crimes are recognized in the Rome Statute as conduct that<br />

occurs as part of a systematic plan or policy for widespread<br />

commission of these crimes. In the context of international<br />

armed conflicts, war crimes that may also amount <strong>to</strong> crimes<br />

against women include:<br />

Wilful killing;<br />

Torture or inhuman treatment, including biological<br />

experiments;<br />

Wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury <strong>to</strong> body<br />

or health;<br />

Committing outrages upon personal dignity, including<br />

humiliating and degrading treatment; and<br />

Rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced<br />

pregnancy, enforced sterilization and other forms of<br />

sexual violence. 213<br />

War crimes: non-international armed conflict<br />

In non-international armed conflicts (typically civil wars), the<br />

following crimes are recognized:<br />
