judges and prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs on what they consider as<br />

appropriate behaviour for women;<br />

“(d) Consider promoting a dialogue on the negative<br />

impact of stereotyping and gender bias in the <strong>justice</strong><br />

system and the need for improved <strong>justice</strong> outcomes for<br />

women victims and survivors of violence;<br />

“(e) Raise awareness on the negative impact of<br />

stereotyping and gender bias and encourage advocacy<br />

related <strong>to</strong> stereotyping and gender bias in <strong>justice</strong><br />

systems, especially in gender-based violence cases; and<br />

“(f) Provide capacity building <strong>to</strong> judges, prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />

lawyers and law enforcement officials on the application of<br />

international legal instruments related <strong>to</strong> human rights,<br />

including the CEDAW Convention and the jurisprudence of<br />

the CEDAW Committee, and on the application of<br />

legislation prohibiting discrimination against women.” 349<br />

Duties on States <strong>to</strong> address the stereotyping in society<br />

that is a cause of gender-based violence<br />

“Effective measures should be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that the media<br />

respect and promote respect for women.” 350<br />

States have a broader obligation <strong>to</strong> address stereotyping in the<br />

wider community, not just those whose work brings them in<strong>to</strong><br />

contact with victims of gender-based violence. The Convention<br />

of Bélem do Pará in this context speaks of the need <strong>to</strong><br />

“encourage the communications media <strong>to</strong> develop appropriate<br />

media guidelines in order <strong>to</strong> contribute <strong>to</strong> the eradication of<br />
