A concept of a new designed individual combat ration, to be used in hot climate operations, was evaluated <strong>and</strong> discussed<br />

in a panel consisting of 10 soldiers very experienced in training <strong>and</strong> missions under hot weather conditions. Based on the<br />

discussions <strong>and</strong> findings the concept of the ration was redesigned. The rations have to fulfill the expected nutritional<br />

requirements <strong>and</strong> energy expenditure during activity <strong>and</strong>/or action in hot weather climates. The expected logistic operations<br />

of the rations (central stocking, transport, local stocking et cetera) <strong>and</strong> the temperature load during life time of the rations were<br />

considered <strong>and</strong> limited the use of certain products to be incorporated in this type of ration. For two products (peanut based<br />

snacks) an in-depth study was done with respect to the feasibility to increase the st<strong>and</strong>ard guaranteed shelf-life of 6 months<br />

up to the needed 2-years period. Measures studied were: 1. Stringent selection of initial product quality <strong>and</strong> 2. Excluding<br />

oxygen in package (oxygen scavenger; 100 % nitrogen atmosphere; high barrier packaging film). For one of the products a<br />

shelf-life up to 2 year in moderated temperatures (20 - 30C) could be achieved <strong>and</strong> the product could even withst<strong>and</strong><br />

temperature abuse of 55C up to 4 months.<br />

This report results from a contract tasking Lhasa Limited as follows. The contractor will investigate techniques to apply<br />

computational methodologies <strong>and</strong> biotechnology database information to predicting the possible toxicity of chemicals. The<br />

goal is to combine available information on chemical structures <strong>and</strong> biotoxicity to predict toxicity of a chemical from its<br />

structure. Routes of entry into the body, organs <strong>and</strong> systems affected, biological half life, modes of inactivation, <strong>and</strong><br />

dose-response relationships will be part of the prediction. In addition, the contractor’s system will provide ‘missing data’ flags.<br />

As such, the system will indicate what information, if provided, would allow a more accurate prediction to be established. The<br />

method can be used to predict effects of foreseeable industrial <strong>and</strong> environmental chemicals as well as unforeseen exposures<br />

during military operations.<br />
