iSCSI is a network storage technology designed to provide an economical solution over a TCP/IP Network. This paper<br />

presents a new iSCSI design with multiple TCP/IP connections. The prototype is developed <strong>and</strong> experiments are conducted<br />

for performance evaluation on Gigabit Ethernet (GE). Test results show that the new iSCSI design improves performance<br />

20%~60% compared with normal iSCSI architecture. Throughput can reach 107MB/s for big I/O <strong>and</strong> I/O rate can reach 15000<br />

IOPS for small I/O.<br />

The National Archives <strong>and</strong> Records Administration (NARA) is the nation s recordkeeper. NARA is a public trust that<br />

safeguards the records of the American people, ensuring the accountability <strong>and</strong> credibility of their national institutions, while<br />

documenting their national experience. Today NARA holds an estimated 4 billion records nationwide. The Archives consists<br />

of the permanently valuable records generated in all three branches of the Federal Government. These record collections span<br />

this country s entire experience, across our history, the breadth of our nation, <strong>and</strong> our people. While paper documents presently<br />

predominate, NARA holds enormous numbers of other media, such as reels of motion picture film, maps, charts, <strong>and</strong><br />

architectural drawings, sound <strong>and</strong> video recordings, aerial photographs, still pictures <strong>and</strong> posters, <strong>and</strong> computer data sets. It<br />

is that last medium, the electronic records, that is the fastest growing record keeping medium in the USA <strong>and</strong> elsewhere in<br />

the world. Since 1998, NARA has established key partnerships with Federal Agencies, state <strong>and</strong> local governments,<br />

universities, other national archives, the scientific community, <strong>and</strong> private industry to perform research enabling better<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the problems <strong>and</strong> the possibilities associated with the electronic records challenge. The challenge of<br />

electronic records encompasses the proof <strong>and</strong> assurance of records authenticity <strong>and</strong> assurance of record persistence <strong>and</strong> ready<br />

access to records over time.<br />

An on-line backup function for X-NAS, a clustered NAS system designed for entry-level NAS, has been developed. The<br />

on-line backup function can replicate file objects on XNAS to a remote NAS in real-time. It makes use of the virtualized global<br />

file system of X-NAS, <strong>and</strong> sends NFS write operations to both X-NAS <strong>and</strong> the remote backup NAS at the same time. The<br />

performance of the on-line backup function was evaluated <strong>and</strong> the evaluation results show that the on-line backup function<br />

of X-NAS improves the system reliability while maintaining 80% of the throughput of the X-NAS without this function.<br />
