<strong>the</strong> Lord your God am holy. Ye shall fear every<br />

man his mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> keep my<br />

<strong>Sabbath</strong>s: I am <strong>the</strong> Lord your God. ... Ye shall keep<br />

my <strong>Sabbath</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> reverence my sanctuary: I am <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord." (Lev. 19:1-3, 30)<br />

These constant references to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong><br />

contrast strikingly with <strong>the</strong> general disobedience <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> people. And thus God speaks again:--<br />

"Six days shall work be done; but <strong>the</strong> seventh<br />

day is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> <strong>of</strong> rest, an holy convocation; ye<br />

shall do no work <strong>the</strong>rein: it is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord in all your dwellings." (Lev.23:3)[8]<br />

Thus does God solemnly designate his rest-day<br />

as a season <strong>of</strong> holy worship, <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong><br />

weekly religious assemblies. Again <strong>the</strong> great Lawgiver<br />

sets forth his <strong>Sabbath</strong>:--<br />

"Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image,<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r rear you up a st<strong>and</strong>ing image, nei<strong>the</strong>r shall<br />

ye set up any image <strong>of</strong> stone in your l<strong>and</strong>, to bow<br />

down unto it; for I am <strong>the</strong> Lord your God. Ye shall<br />
