throne who raised <strong>the</strong> papacy to its highest<br />

elevation. Two facts worthy <strong>of</strong> much thought<br />

should here be named in connection:--<br />

1. The first act <strong>of</strong> papal usurpation was by an<br />

edict in behalf <strong>of</strong> Sunday.[56]<br />

2. The utmost height <strong>of</strong> papal usurpation was<br />

marked by <strong>the</strong> pope's act <strong>of</strong> furnishing a divine<br />

precept for Sunday observance.<br />

The mission <strong>of</strong> Eustace was attested by<br />

miracles which are worthy <strong>of</strong> perusal by those who<br />

believe in first-day sacredness because <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

thus believed. Here <strong>the</strong>y may learn what was done<br />

six centuries since, to fix <strong>the</strong>se ideas in <strong>the</strong> minds<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs. Eustace came to York, in <strong>the</strong> north<br />

<strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong>, meeting an honorable reception,<br />

"Preached <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

breaking <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r festivals,<br />

<strong>and</strong> imposed upon <strong>the</strong> people penance <strong>and</strong> gave<br />

absolution, upon condition that, in future <strong>the</strong>y<br />
