something to obey <strong>the</strong> fourth comm<strong>and</strong>ment in<br />

such times as those. The laws <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> during<br />

that century were very oppressive to all Dissenters,<br />

<strong>and</strong> bore exceedingly hard upon <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>keepers.<br />

But God raised up able men, eminent for<br />

piety, to defend his truth during those troublous<br />

times, <strong>and</strong>, if need be, to seal <strong>the</strong>ir testimony with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir blood. In <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century, eleven<br />

churches <strong>of</strong> Sabbatarians flourished in Engl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

while many scattered <strong>Sabbath</strong>-keepers were to be<br />

found in various parts <strong>of</strong> that kingdom. Now, but<br />

three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se churches are in existence! And only<br />

remnants, even <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, remain!<br />

To what cause shall we assign this painful fact?<br />

It is not because <strong>the</strong>ir adversaries were able to<br />

confute <strong>the</strong>ir doctrine; for <strong>the</strong> controversial works<br />

on both sides still remain, <strong>and</strong> speak for<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. It is not that <strong>the</strong>y lacked men <strong>of</strong> piety<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> learning; for God gave <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>se,<br />

especially in <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century. Nor is it that<br />

fanaticism sprang up <strong>and</strong> disgraced <strong>the</strong> cause; for<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no record <strong>of</strong> anything <strong>of</strong> this kind. They<br />

were cruelly persecuted, but <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
