Yet it is necessary to assume <strong>the</strong> very points that<br />

this text is supposed to prove. 1. It is assumed that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Saviour became <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corner by his<br />

resurrection. 2. That <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> his resurrection was<br />

made <strong>the</strong> Christian <strong>Sabbath</strong> in commemoration <strong>of</strong><br />

that event. 3. And that this day thus ordained<br />

should be celebrated by abstinence from labor, <strong>and</strong><br />

attendance upon divine worship.<br />

To <strong>the</strong>se extraordinary assumptions it is proper<br />

to reply: 1. There is no pro<strong>of</strong> that Jesus became <strong>the</strong><br />

head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corner on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> his resurrection.<br />

The Scriptures do not mark <strong>the</strong> day when this event<br />

took place. His being made head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corner has<br />

reference to his becoming <strong>the</strong> chief corner stone <strong>of</strong><br />

that spiritual temple composed <strong>of</strong> his people; in<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r words, it has reference to his becoming head<br />

<strong>of</strong> that living body, <strong>the</strong> saints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Most High. It<br />

does not appear that he assumed this position until<br />

his ascension on high, where he became <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

corner stone in Zion above, elect <strong>and</strong> precious.<br />

(Eph. 1:20-23; 2:20, 21; 1 Pet. 2:4-7) And hence<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no evidence that <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week is<br />

even referred to in this text. 2. Nor is <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong><br />
