<strong>and</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>s to be forgotten in Zion, <strong>and</strong> hath<br />

despised in <strong>the</strong> indignation <strong>of</strong> his anger <strong>the</strong> king<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> priest. The Lord hath cast <strong>of</strong>f his altar, he<br />

hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into<br />

<strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy <strong>the</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> her palaces;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have made a noise in <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord, as<br />

in <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> a solemn feast." (Lam. 1:7; 2:5-7)<br />

The feasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord were to be holden in <strong>the</strong><br />

place which <strong>the</strong> Lord should choose, namely,<br />

Jerusalem; (Deut. 16:16; 2 Chron. 7:12; Ps. 122)<br />

<strong>and</strong> when that city, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir solemn<br />

assemblies, was destroyed <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> people<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves carried into captivity, <strong>the</strong> complete<br />

cessation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir feasts, <strong>and</strong>, as a consequence, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> annual <strong>Sabbath</strong>s, which were specified days in<br />

those feasts, must occur. The adversaries mocked<br />

at her <strong>Sabbath</strong>s, by making a "noise in <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord as in <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> a solemn feast." But <strong>the</strong><br />

observance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord's <strong>Sabbath</strong> did not cease<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dispersion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews from <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

l<strong>and</strong>; for it was not a local institution, like <strong>the</strong><br />

annual <strong>Sabbath</strong>s. Its violation was one chief cause<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Babylonish captivity; (Jer. 17:19-27; Neh.<br />
