those scriptures which record <strong>the</strong> provision made<br />

for <strong>the</strong>se <strong>of</strong>ferings. (1 Chron. 23:31; 2 Chron. 2:4;<br />

8:13; 31:3; Neh. 10:31, 33; Eze. 45:17) When <strong>the</strong><br />

ceremonial law was nailed to <strong>the</strong> cross, all <strong>the</strong><br />

Jewish festivals ceased to exist; for <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

ordained by it;[5] but <strong>the</strong> abrogation <strong>of</strong> that law<br />

could only take away those rites which it had<br />

appended to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>, leaving <strong>the</strong> original<br />

institution precisely as it came at first from its<br />

author.<br />

The earliest reference to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> after <strong>the</strong><br />

days <strong>of</strong> Moses is found in what David <strong>and</strong> Samuel<br />

ordained respecting <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> priests <strong>and</strong><br />

Levites at <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> God. It is as follows:--<br />

"And o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir brethren, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kohathites, were over <strong>the</strong> shew-bread, to prepare it<br />

every <strong>Sabbath</strong>." (1 Chron. 9:32)<br />

It will be observed that this is only an<br />

incidental mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>. Such an<br />

allusion, occurring after so long a silence, is<br />

decisive pro<strong>of</strong> that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> had not been<br />
