thyself in <strong>the</strong> Lord; <strong>and</strong> I will cause <strong>the</strong>e to ride<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> high places <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, <strong>and</strong> feed <strong>the</strong>e<br />

with <strong>the</strong> heritage <strong>of</strong> Jacob thy fa<strong>the</strong>r; for <strong>the</strong> mouth<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord hath spoken it." (Isa. 58:13, 14)<br />

This language is an evangelical commentary<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> fourth comm<strong>and</strong>ment. It appends to it an<br />

exceeding great <strong>and</strong> precious promise that takes<br />

hold upon <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> promised to Jacob, even <strong>the</strong><br />

new earth. (Matt. 8:11; Heb. 11:8-16; Rev.21)<br />

In <strong>the</strong> year B. C. 601, thirteen years before <strong>the</strong><br />

destruction <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, God<br />

made to <strong>the</strong> Jewish people through Jeremiah <strong>the</strong><br />

gracious <strong>of</strong>fer, that if <strong>the</strong>y would keep his <strong>Sabbath</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir city should st<strong>and</strong> forever. At <strong>the</strong> same time he<br />

testified unto <strong>the</strong>m that if <strong>the</strong>y would not do this,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir city should be utterly destroyed. Thus said <strong>the</strong><br />

prophet:--<br />

"Hear ye <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord, ye kings <strong>of</strong><br />

Judah, <strong>and</strong> all Judah, <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> inhabitants <strong>of</strong><br />

Jerusalem, that enter in by <strong>the</strong>se gates: Thus saith<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord: Take heed to yourselves, <strong>and</strong> bear no<br />
