appropriate memorial; while <strong>the</strong> days on which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y severally occurred have no importance<br />

attached to <strong>the</strong>m. It was <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> redeemer,<br />

<strong>and</strong> not <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> his death, that was worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

commemoration; <strong>and</strong> hence <strong>the</strong> Lord's supper was<br />

appointed for that purpose. It was <strong>the</strong> resurrection<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saviour, <strong>and</strong> not <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> resurrection,<br />

that was worthy <strong>of</strong> commemoration; <strong>and</strong> hence<br />

burial in baptism was ordained as its memorial. It<br />

is <strong>the</strong> change <strong>of</strong> this memorial to sprinkling that<br />

has furnished s plausible a plea for first-day<br />

observance in memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> resurrection.<br />

To celebrated <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> redemption by<br />

resting from labor on <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week after<br />

six days <strong>of</strong> toil, it should be true that our Lord<br />

accomplished <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> human redemption in <strong>the</strong><br />

six days prior to that <strong>of</strong> his resurrection, <strong>and</strong> that he<br />

rested on that day from <strong>the</strong> work, blessing it, <strong>and</strong><br />

setting it apart for that reason. Yet not one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

particulars is true. Our Lord's whole life was<br />

devoted to this work. He rested temporarily from it<br />

indeed over <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> following his crucifixion,<br />

but resumed <strong>the</strong> work on <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
