evidence that <strong>John</strong> did not receive new light in<br />

vision at Patmos, bidding him call <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> week <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Day</strong>, <strong>and</strong> when taken with all<br />

<strong>the</strong> instances preceding, <strong>the</strong>y constitute a complete<br />

demonstration that <strong>the</strong> first day was not familiarly<br />

known as <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> in <strong>John</strong>'s time, nor indeed<br />

known at all by that name <strong>the</strong>n.<br />

Let us now see whe<strong>the</strong>r Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> as a title<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first day can be traced back to <strong>John</strong> by<br />

means <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> writings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

The following is a concise statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

testimony by which <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs are made to prove<br />

that <strong>John</strong> used <strong>the</strong> term Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> as a name for<br />

<strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week. A chain <strong>of</strong> seven<br />

successive witnesses, commencing with one who<br />

was <strong>the</strong> disciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong>, <strong>and</strong> extending forward<br />

through several generations, is made to connect<br />

<strong>and</strong> identify <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong> with <strong>the</strong><br />

Sunday-Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> <strong>of</strong> a later age. Thus, Ignatius,<br />

<strong>the</strong> disciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong>, is made to speak familiarly <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first day as <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Day</strong>. This is directly<br />

connecting <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> apostles. Then <strong>the</strong><br />
