should be remembered that <strong>the</strong> moral law<br />

embracing <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> formed a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CIVIL<br />

code <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrew nation. As such, <strong>the</strong> great Lawgiver<br />

annexed penalties to be inflicted by <strong>the</strong><br />

magistrate, thus doubtless shadowing forth <strong>the</strong> final<br />

retribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ungodly. Such penalties were<br />

suspended by that remarkable decision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Saviour that those who were without sin should<br />

cast <strong>the</strong> first stone. But such a Being will arise to<br />

punish men, when <strong>the</strong> hailstones <strong>of</strong> his wrath shall<br />

desolate <strong>the</strong> earth. Our Lord did not, however, set<br />

aside <strong>the</strong> real penalty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law, <strong>the</strong> wages <strong>of</strong> sin,<br />

nor did he weaken that precept which had been<br />

violated. <strong>John</strong> 8:1-9; Job 38:22, 23; Isa.28:17;<br />

Rev.16:17-21; Rom.6:23. three thous<strong>and</strong> men."<br />

And Moses returned unto God <strong>and</strong> interceded in<br />

behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people. Then God promised that his<br />

angel should go with <strong>the</strong>m, but that he himself<br />

would not go up in <strong>the</strong>ir midst lest he should<br />

consume <strong>the</strong>m.[6] Then Moses presented an<br />

earnest supplication to <strong>the</strong> Most High that he might<br />

see his glory. This petition was granted, saving that<br />
