But Hoveden tells us that "<strong>the</strong> enemy <strong>of</strong><br />

mankind raised against this man <strong>of</strong> God <strong>the</strong><br />

ministers <strong>of</strong> iniquity," <strong>and</strong> it seems that having no<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ment for Sunday he was in a strait place.<br />

The historian continues:--<br />

"However, <strong>the</strong> said abbot, on being censured by<br />

<strong>the</strong> ministers <strong>of</strong> Satan, was unwilling any longer to<br />

molest <strong>the</strong> prelates <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> by his preaching,<br />

but returned to Norm<strong>and</strong>y, unto his place whence<br />

he came."[47]<br />

But Eustace, though repulsed, had no thought<br />

<strong>of</strong> ab<strong>and</strong>oning <strong>the</strong> contest. He had no<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ment from <strong>the</strong> Lord when he came into<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> first time. But one year's sojourn on<br />

<strong>the</strong> continent was sufficient to provide that which<br />

he lacked. Hoveden tells us how he returned <strong>the</strong><br />

following year with <strong>the</strong> needed precept:--<br />

"In <strong>the</strong> same year [1201], Eustace, abbot <strong>of</strong><br />
