its origin, it can never cease to be such. Satan's<br />

great falsehood which involved our race in ruin has<br />

not yet become <strong>the</strong> truth, although six thous<strong>and</strong><br />

years have elapsed since it was uttered. Think <strong>of</strong><br />

this, ye who worship at <strong>the</strong> shrine <strong>of</strong> venerable<br />

error. When <strong>the</strong> fables <strong>of</strong> men obtained <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> God, he was <strong>the</strong>reby dishonored. How,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, can he accept obedience to <strong>the</strong>m as any part<br />

<strong>of</strong> that pure devotion which he requires at our<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s? They that worship God must worship him<br />

in Spirit <strong>and</strong> in truth. How many ages must pass<br />

over <strong>the</strong> fables <strong>of</strong> men before <strong>the</strong>y become changed<br />

into divine truth? That <strong>the</strong>se predictions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New<br />

Testament respecting <strong>the</strong> great apostasy in <strong>the</strong><br />

church were fully realized, <strong>the</strong> pages <strong>of</strong><br />

ecclesiastical history present ample pro<strong>of</strong>. Mr.<br />

Dowling, in his <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> Romanism, bears <strong>the</strong><br />

following testimony:--<br />

"There is scarcely anything which strikes <strong>the</strong><br />

mind <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> careful student <strong>of</strong> ancient ecclesiastical<br />

history with greater surprise than <strong>the</strong> comparatively<br />

early period at which many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corruptions <strong>of</strong><br />

Christianity, which are embodied in <strong>the</strong> Romish<br />
