that each new moon, that is, <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> every<br />

month, should be observed with certain specified<br />

<strong>of</strong>ferings, <strong>and</strong> with tokens <strong>of</strong> rejoicing. (Num.<br />

10:10; 28:11-15; 1 Sam. 20:5, 24, 27; Ps. 81:8) The<br />

annual <strong>Sabbath</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews have been already<br />

enumerated. The first two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Sabbath</strong>s were<br />

<strong>the</strong> first <strong>and</strong> seventh days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong><br />

unleavened bread, that is, <strong>the</strong> fifteenth <strong>and</strong> twentyfirst<br />

days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first month. They were thus<br />

ordained by God:--<br />

"Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread;<br />

even <strong>the</strong> first day ye shall put away leaven out <strong>of</strong><br />

your houses. ... And in <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>the</strong>re shall be<br />

an holy convocation, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> seventh day <strong>the</strong>re<br />

shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner <strong>of</strong><br />

work shall be done in <strong>the</strong>m, save that which every<br />

man must eat, that only may be done <strong>of</strong> you." (Ex.<br />

12:15, 16; Lev. 23:7, 8; Num. 28:17, 18, 25)<br />

The third in order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual <strong>Sabbath</strong>s was<br />

<strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> Pentecost. This festival was ordained as<br />

a rest-day in <strong>the</strong> following language:--<br />
