synagogue <strong>and</strong> consulted how <strong>the</strong>y might destroy<br />

<strong>the</strong> Saviour. Yet Jesus only acted in behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Sabbath</strong> in setting aside those traditions by which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had perverted it.<br />

After this, our Lord returned into his own<br />

country, <strong>and</strong> thus we read <strong>of</strong> him:--<br />

"And when <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> day was come, he<br />

began to teach in <strong>the</strong> synagogue; <strong>and</strong> many hearing<br />

him were astonished, saying, From whence hath<br />

this man <strong>the</strong>se things? <strong>and</strong> what wisdom is this<br />

which is given unto him, that even such mighty<br />

works are wrought by his h<strong>and</strong>s?" (Mark 6:1-6)<br />

Not far from this time we find <strong>the</strong> Saviour at<br />

Jerusalem, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> following miracle was<br />

performed upon <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>:--<br />

"And a certain man was <strong>the</strong>re which had an<br />

infirmity thirty <strong>and</strong> eight years. When Jesus saw<br />

him lie, <strong>and</strong> knew that he had been <strong>the</strong>re now a<br />

long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou<br />

be made whole? The impotent man answered him,<br />
