"Thou camest down also upon Mount Sinai,<br />

<strong>and</strong> spakest with <strong>the</strong>m from heaven, <strong>and</strong> gavest<br />

<strong>the</strong>m right judgments, <strong>and</strong> true laws, good statutes<br />

<strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ments: <strong>and</strong> madest known unto <strong>the</strong>m<br />

thy holy <strong>Sabbath</strong>, <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>est <strong>the</strong>m precepts,<br />

statutes, <strong>and</strong> laws, by <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Moses thy<br />

servant." (Neh. 9:13, 14)<br />

Thus were all <strong>the</strong> people reminded <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great<br />

events <strong>of</strong> Mount Sinai -- <strong>the</strong> giving <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten<br />

words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> making known <strong>of</strong><br />

his holy <strong>Sabbath</strong>. So deeply impressed was <strong>the</strong><br />

whole congregation with <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir former<br />

disobedience, that <strong>the</strong>y entered into a solemn<br />

covenant to obey God. (Neh. 9:38; 10:1-31) They<br />

pledged <strong>the</strong>mselves to each o<strong>the</strong>r thus:--<br />

"And if <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> bring ware or<br />

any victuals on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> day to sell, that we<br />

would not buy it <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>, or on <strong>the</strong><br />

holy day; <strong>and</strong> that we would leave <strong>the</strong> seventh<br />

year, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> exaction <strong>of</strong> every debt." (Neh. 10:31)<br />

In <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> Nehemiah at <strong>the</strong> Persian<br />
