This act <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pope corroborates <strong>the</strong><br />

testimonies we have adduced in pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>-keepers in <strong>the</strong> Dark Ages.<br />

Gregory <strong>the</strong> Seventh was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest men<br />

that ever filled <strong>the</strong> papal chair. Whatever class he<br />

ana<strong>the</strong>matized was <strong>of</strong> some consequence. Gregory<br />

wasted nothing on trifles.[57]<br />

In <strong>the</strong> eleventh century, <strong>the</strong>re were <strong>Sabbath</strong>keepers<br />

also in Constantinople <strong>and</strong> its vicinity. The<br />

pope, in A.D. 1054, sent three legates to <strong>the</strong><br />

emperor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> patriarch <strong>of</strong><br />

Constantinople, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> re-uniting <strong>the</strong><br />

Greek <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Latin churches. Cardinal Humbert<br />

was <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> this legation. The legates, on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

arrival, set <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> refuting those<br />

doctrines which distinguish <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong><br />

Constantinople from that <strong>of</strong> Rome. After <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

attended to <strong>the</strong> questions which separated <strong>the</strong> two<br />

churches, <strong>the</strong>y found it also necessary to discuss<br />

<strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>. For one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />
