church fellowship. Had <strong>the</strong> first-day people been <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same mind, <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> would have<br />

been extinguished within a few years, as <strong>the</strong> history<br />

<strong>of</strong> English <strong>Sabbath</strong>-keepers clearly proves. But, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> providence <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong> danger was averted by<br />

<strong>the</strong> opposition which <strong>the</strong>se comm<strong>and</strong>ment-keepers<br />

had to encounter.<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong> persons above enumerated, four<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs embraced <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> in 1666, but in 1668<br />

<strong>the</strong>y renounced it. These four were also members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>First</strong>-day Baptist church <strong>of</strong> Newport. Though<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>-keepers who retained <strong>the</strong>ir integrity<br />

thought that <strong>the</strong>y might lawfully commune with <strong>the</strong><br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church who were fully persuaded<br />

to observe <strong>the</strong> first day, yet <strong>the</strong>y felt o<strong>the</strong>rwise with<br />

respect to <strong>the</strong>se who had clearly seen <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> had for a time observed it, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n apostatized<br />

from it. These persons "both wrote <strong>and</strong> spoke<br />

against it, which so grieved <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

not sit down at <strong>the</strong> table <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord with <strong>the</strong>m, nor<br />

with <strong>the</strong> church because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m." But as <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

members <strong>of</strong> a first-day church, <strong>and</strong> had "no power<br />

to deal with <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves without <strong>the</strong> help<br />
